Established in 2001, the .NAME universal domain name extension is the single TLD intended for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to book john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired 3rd-level domains remained operational.
